Opened in 2010, Anderson & Hill is still almost unbelievably the only delicatessen in the centre of Birmingham. Still, that lack of choice on the streets of Brum isn’t repeated inside the store where you’ll find many a hearty treat from Italy, Spain, Germany and France.
Cheese is the word here, over 50 types in fact, with specialty brands from around the continent: Opus and Purnell’s restaurants are both customers so something must smell good. Right now, owner Will Anderson is singing the blues; the Oxford Blue and Valdeón Spanish Blue to be precise. But if that’s a bit too whiffy for you, perhaps the local Tamworth Camembert or Joie de Chèvre (that’s goat’s cheese to me and you) from Brock Hall Farm Dairy might suit your palette.
Elsewhere in the shop it’s an absolute orgy of chutneys, condiments, pates and pasta. Will’s aim is to “find, source and sell the best quality food I can; things you don’t find in the main street.”
Hard to argue with that.
